1. Programming Courses

This probably goes without saying, but you will certainly need to show proof of programming knowledge if you want to get a serious job in game design. Although the platform you use to program games in may be new to you, if you can show that you have learned and worked with programming languages such as C and C++, you’ll be ahead of the game.

2. Computer Graphic Design And Animation Courses

You will also want to take classes in computer animation. Even if you aren’t artistically gifted, it will be very helpful if you can at least understand this aspect of game design. If you are focusing on programming for example, being able to show a potential employer that you also studied 3-D design and animation will make you even more valuable.

3. Game Theory Courses

As technology advances and the number of gamers continues to grow, expectations for game titles will become higher and higher. Being able to think up and design these types of games requires a strong working knowledge of game theory and it’s application in the real world.

Because of this, it is recommended you take history or political science courses that focus on game theory as applied in the real world; for example in war and in politics. These types of courses, while not specifically intended for budding game designers, will give you the ability to dream up and mastermind incredible and challenging gaming scenarios that you can wow your employers with.

They are called Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, or MMORPGs and they are a genre of online video games that over 15 million people worldwide are now playing.  In the world of interactive video games and virtual worlds it is not uncommon for a player to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on items that enhance their playing experience or build their status.  A whole new economy has been created because of online video games like World of Warcraft, Everquest and Second Life.  It is a classic fantasy themed battle game in the tradition of Dungeons and Dragons.

World of Warcraft has a full menu of items you can buy to enhance or improve your online gaming experience.  As you achieve higher game levels and player status more products and services become available to enhance your experience.

Second Life is an online virtual world where people can go and live another life inside Cyberspace.  Millions of US dollars are spent each month with the transactions that take place inside this virtual world.

Since 2004 the worldwide grosses for the genre of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games has doubled each year.  From 500 million dollars in 2005 to 1 billion dollars in 2006 this industry is expected to continue thriving and gross well over 2 billion dollars in 2007.  As more and more people around the world look to online video games and virtual worlds for recreation and escapism the future looks brighter every day for those who sell virtual products and services.
